Expect to Hear the Voice of God

sexual betrayal and hearing from God

I made some big and bad decisions for myself in my teens and 20’s. My emotions were in charge of the decision department. Fear was the leader. But at age 36 I asked God back into my life and asked Him to lead me instead.

So when I was going through the depths of my crisis at age 40, learning of my husband’s serial marital betrayals and infidelity, I desperately wanted to know God’s thoughts on my situation. My emotions knew what they wanted me to do. Except they would change their minds several times a day. So do I flee, or do I wait and see?

I knew I could leave without guilt. But I also was a mommy for the first time to our six month old daughter. Probably just like you, I wanted answers. Personal answers. FOR MY LIFE. I was in the depths of grief, but I needed direction more than comfort. I wanted His wisdom to make a choice from His Kingdom perspective, not from my hurt and anger and mistrust. So I asked Him questions and waited to hear clearly.

My focus was on being a very good listener.
To listen to God for answers to my questions.
Do You want me to stay? Am I free to go?
How do I know if I can trust again?

God did not disappoint. He talked to me in various ways. Sometimes it was a thought. Sometimes it was an image. It was direction. It was a circumstance that He orchestrated. It was a video He played to me in my mind’s eye. It was evidence. It was peace. It was strength I didn’t possess. It was an answer to a question.

You can hear from God personally in the same way too - Each of us can have communication with Him more intimately and pertaining to our life circumstance. You have the opportunity to hear from God - that voice we hear when we say ‘it wasn’t audible, I heard it in my head, God talking to me, but it was better than my thoughts.’

Jesus Promised us the Holy Spirit.

As Jesus was preparing His disciples for His departure from this world, He promised the Holy Spirit would be with us, so that each Christ follower can communicate directly with God:

“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever — the Spirit of truth.”

“The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you. ….The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything that I have told you”.
John 15 -17, 26

The Holy Spirit isn’t just somewhere out there, HE’S IN YOU. Nudging your conscience, speaking loving thoughts to you, giving you clear direction. That ability is built in through your loving, committed relationship with Him. We have to be attuned to hear and discern that it’s God speaking to and through us. It’s not just our ‘good’ self speaking if we’ve invited God into our life. The more we communicate with Him, the more familiar we become with the sound of His voice.

In Romans 8:26 we are again encouraged that “In the same way the Spirit also joins to help in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with unspoken groanings.”

And in Isaiah 11:2 it was prophesied about the coming Messiah Jesus “the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.”

All these attributes of the Holy Spirit are for our benefit. Helper. Interceder. Counselor. Strength. Wisdom. Knowledge. Truth.

How powerful and comforting to know that you have
available your own personal Counselor, to be a Helper
and Interceder for your needs, with the Strength of God,
who can only speak Knowledge, Wisdom and Truth.
